We don’t believe music education should be ‘one size fits all’

Every student is different and we pride ourselves on being able to tailor lessons to fit the needs and goals of each and every one. Other music schools in Hong Kong tend to focus solely on coaching students through grade exams, with some even insisting on it to join the school. We believe that, if a teacher is doing their job correctly then students should be able to pass an appropriate level grade exam - if they choose to - without it taking months of specific preparation. Our goal is to teach you the skills and techniques you need to understand music and play confidently. You can then decide which styles or genres you want to explore in more detail.

Regular performances

All our students are given the opportunity to perform every month at one of Hong Kong’s best live music venues - The Wanch. There are no auditions and no fees for students to join one of these performances. All students are encouraged to join but no-one is forced or pressured to do so. Being able to ‘practice’ performing regularly helps build students’ skills, motivates them to learn and builds confidence, not only in music but in daily life too.

Every student has a 'real' drum kit

When you have a private drum lesson at Aspire you will be playing your own, ‘real’ (acoustic) drum kit for the whole lesson. You will not be sharing a kit with the teacher or another student, and you will not be learning on an electric drum kit. In group lessons we use a combination of electric and acoustic drum kits and the students rotate between them from week to week so they become familiar with both.

Choose your own music

Aspire students are encouraged to choose their own repertoire of favourite songs or songs they’d love to be able to play. Our teachers then plan lessons with these songs in mind, tailoring specific exercises and teaching the techniques required to successfully play them. Where songs are too high a level for the student, our teachers will either simplify and then build the song slowly or suggest a ‘learning ladder’ of similar songs building the student’s skills before tackling the goal song.

Learn to do more than just breathe

Many vocal teachers seem to focus a lot of lesson time on learning to breathe “properly”. At Aspire we teach you more than just breathing, we learn how to make the correct vocal cord adjustments in order to blend your low, middle and high registers.

We believe anyone can learn to sing better

Some people do seem to pick things up faster than others or have a more natural talent but it doesn’t mean you can’t learn to become a better singer. Through carefully planned and targeted exercises, we build and discover every part of your voice. You’ll be singing with more confidence in no time!

We work on your 'mix'

Learning how to 'mix' your voice is the most essential part of singing! In you lessons at Aspire you’ll learn to blend your lower and upper range to create a mix voice, giving your middle range the power of your lower register with the lightness and freedom of your upper range.

Musikgarten

Ensuring your child’s success and satisfaction

“Success” in our Musikgarten classes is measured in the social, musical, and intellectual enrichment that the child, and the whole family, experiences.

Age-specific Curricula

Our age-appropriate and sequential curriculum is the most comprehensive in the industry. Developed by music and movement pioneers, the Musikgarten sequence introduces children to the joy of music and effectively guides them toward lifelong, active participation in music. Beginning simply, at around 15 months old, with singing, moving, and exploring rhythm instruments, we add levels of complexity as the children grow, expanding the singing repertoire, teaching more complex dances, and building instrumental ensembles. Children coming through the Musikgarten program inherently "know" the music they eventually play in later years in group piano instruction.

Education

Additional resources are always available to parents who want to learn more about the science behind music and movement. This includes educational emails, blogs, and articles of interest, our Authors Notes e-newsletter and, for a modest cost, the Neuroscience of Music, which explains how children can benefit developmentally, intellectually, and physiologically from attending Musikgarten.

Experience

Our founders have been involved in early childhood music education since before it was recognized. Dr. Lorna Lutz Heyge has been developing early childhood music curricula for more than 30 years, while Audrey Sillick has been training early childhood educators for 40 years.

Expert teachers

Musikgarten's expertly trained and well-supported teachers combine a love of music and an understanding of children and the way they learn into lessons that children and their families love, using folk music and fun activities.

Research

Music and movement can have a dramatic effect on babies, toddlers, and older children as well. Some studies indicate that early music instruction positively impacts language and literacy development; others point to improved pattern recognition skills which are the basis for mathematical learning; still others reveal the social and emotional benefits of being involved in music. Given our long-standing reputation as the leader in the field of affordable early music education, Musikgarten can give your child a learning advantage for life.
